A protester in Myanmar was in a critical condition on Tuesday after she was shot by police during a protest, a doctor told local media, as the regime resorted to violence in a bid to stamp out an uprising against last week’s military coup.
Police reportedly fired live ammunition and rubber bullets into the crowd as well as using water cannon and tear gas to violently crack down on a fourth day of mass nationwide protests, with dozens of people detained and some injured.
The woman, who is believed to be in her early 20s, was at a protest in the capital Naypyitaw when police shot her in the head, according to reports by local media outlets including Myanmar Now and Frontier Myanmar
Demonstrators across the country defied a ban on gatherings of more than four people, issued by the regime on Monday, to voice their opposition to the coup and demand the release of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other top officials from the ousted government.
