We are vigilant about IS fundamentalists

State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday warned that there could still be individuals who have a leaning towards Islamic State (IS) ideology who could launch more attacks but assured that law enforcement authorities are vigilant of such a scenario.

Responding to a question by a journalist during an event held to commemorate war hero Hasalaka Gamini, the State Minster said IS fundamentalists had carried out attacks not only in Sri Lanka, but also in England, Europe, America and Australia.

“We have eliminated Zahran’s group in Sri Lanka and those who remain have being arrested. However, there is a possibility of individuals who have a tendency to lean towards IS ideology planning their own attacks.

I am not saying such incidents would take place. But there is a possibility. We cannot deny that because such incidents have taken place in other countries as well,” he said.
However, he said the defence ministry, tri-forces, the police and the Intelligence services in the country have always been vigilant about such individuals and would work to ensure the safety of the public.

Commenting on the present security situation in the country, the State Minister said he was satisfied about the situation. D. S. B.
