Government yesterday withdrew the proposed amendment to the Vote on Account (VoA) to allocate expenditure, along with increase
in debt ceiling.
Leader of the House who announced this decision in Parliament said the government had decided to withdraw the VoA and the proposal to increase debt ceiling, as the opposition had opposed it. “We have decided to withdraw the VoA and the proposal to increase debt ceiling as the opposition has opposed it at the party leaders’ meeting. The government brought these proposals on behalf of the people,” he said.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said, the opposition is not against providing relief to the people but only oppose the move to increase the debt ceiling.
Parliament sessions were suspended for about an hour following the request made by the government for a party leaders’ meeting so that the issues pertaining to VoA and the increasing of debt ceiling could be resolved.
