In the light of the spread of COVID-19, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has requested health authorities to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to monitor those who are in quarantine centres and those who have been requested to undergo self-quarantine following their arrival from overseas.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Navin de Zoysa said they had pointed out to the authorities that the Health Ministry with the help of GPS facility, it could especially monitor the movements of the people under self-quarantine to ascertain whether they are following the due procedures during the quarantine period.

Many countries such as China, Israel, South Korea and Singapore are already using this technology for this purpose, he said.
