Responding to the claim made by Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) that it will have the support of 70 MPs if Parliament was reconvened, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said everyone would be able to witness how many people truly supported his party.

“I will not reveal the number of MPs who will back the UNP as one would be able to see it if Parliament is reconvened,” he said when a question was posed to him at a press conference held yesterday.

Responding to another question as to whether the UNP wanted the general election postponed in order to unite with SJB once again, he said efforts were made to contest together before nominations were closed but it was not successful.

“We were forced to go solo and contest under the elephant symbol as efforts to unite all factions failed. Decisions pertaining to the party are taken by the working committee,” he said.
