The United National Party (UNP) yesterday vehemently condemned the comments made on the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith by former MP Harin Fernando.
“The recent comments by the SJB member on the conduct of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith during the presidential election is a political stunt that UNP vehemently condemns,” the UNP said in a statement. “Services rendered by the Cardinal especially his support to the government and the country following the Easter Sunday attacks must not be forgotten.”
Meanwhile UNP deputy general secretary Ruwan Wijewardene commenting on the matter said one should not insult a religious leader no matter what the political ideology he or she holds.
