The Department of Export Agriculture in a letter addressed to the Import Export Controller informed that it has been recommended to release the consignments of turmeric already imported to the country.

“With reference to the Treasury Secretary’s letter dated 6.04 2020 and the decisions taken at the meeting headed by the Minister and the Secretary of Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture, it was decided to recommend the release of turmeric consignments already imported to the country after reviewing the consumer demand and shortage of turmeric in Sri Lanka. Accordingly I wish to inform you that the Department of Export Agriculture has no objections to release the dried turmeric consignments to the importers mentioned in the attached table.
Also it was decided not to issue notice of no objection to clear turmeric consignments after 10.05.2020 during the meeting held on 28.04. 2020 at the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture.

The decision to release the consignments comes after lobbying by the Sri Lankan importers themselves and few other parties including the Indian exporters.
