The National programme in introducing thirteen years of guaranteed education was launched yesterday at Temple Trees under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

This programme is to be implemented under the theme “The professional turning point in Free Education”.

This scheme would enable students who sit for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination to obtain Higher Educational qualifications notwithstanding whether they pass or fail.
The student is able to obtain an established professional training for the expected job and also learn the necessary guidelines. They will also able to obtain a professional qualification (NVQ) 4 certificate which is nationally accepted and become competent in the field of their choice. This is the primary objective of this programme, Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam explained during this programme launch.

He stated that 26 subjects covering 7 business sectors would be covered under this programme. Under stage one 42 schools had been chosen as certified schools providing 13 years of school education while another 154 schools would be chosen under the second stage of the programme.

It is also envisaged that under stage 3 this programme would be implemented among 661 schools.

A theme song which was composed to signify the start of the programme was also played on the occasion.

At this event a Modular Kit was presented to a selected college from each province as a symbolic gesture.
