The government has decided to temporarily halt the provision of Tabs for schoolchildren until a proper probe into the alleged misappropriations was carried out.

Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardana yesterday at a news briefing said that Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma had sought Cabinet approval for this suspension. The Cabinet has also appointed a committee to review the provision of Tabs for schoolchildren.

“It is appropriate to carry out a proper probe into the misappropriation of funds that had reportedly taken place in distributing Tabs,” he said.
The provision of Tabs was launched by the previous government’s Ministry of Education in October 2017.

Former Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had decided to distribute Tabs among Advanced Level students and teachers.
