The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday admitted that a person who was arrested at Dematagoda in connection with the recent explosions represented the JVP national list at the 2015 general election and however claimed that he was neither a member of the JVP nor an activist.
It said in a statement that the JVP included a person in the national list to give opportunities to people from various professions and nationalities who do not get an opportunity to contest elections.
The statement said certain bankrupt political groups seemed to be fishing in troubled waters where they have launched a smear campaign targeting the JVP.
“All those who have a conscience and are not hypocritical know that the JVP doesn’t sustain such barbaric acts but a political party that is disciplined and acts with responsibility. As such, carrying out a smear campaign against the JVP based on an individual who has been arrested on suspicion is indeed a move carried out by bankrupt political groups with a sinister motive,” it added.
It said it was the responsibility of the security sections to investigate whether this individual or members of his family were connected with the incidents in any way and punish the perpetrators and added that the JVP was prepared to assist in any manner in such investigation.
The statement further said fraudsters, who were responsible for various kinds of frauds and corruption, were using such sensitive incidents to carry out smear campaigns against the JVP in a bid to hide their nudity and fulfil their vile political interests was regrettable.
