While raising concerns over certain Christmas programmes broadcast on several television channels over the past few years, the Cardinal Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that certain such programmes celebrated Christmas where the people in it weren't even dressed properly.

"Certain media programmes celebrated Christmas where the people in it weren't even dressed properly. Don't do this. Christmas isn't about a jolly celebration. It is a spiritual and religious moment. We are against such moves to make use of the ideal meaning of  Christmas for other purposes,” the Cardinal stressed.

He requested media institutions to refrain from broadcasting programmes which taint the true meaning of Christmas.

He expressed these views while addressing a news briefing yesterday.

“Therefore, we implore the media to stop misleading the next generation,” he said. The Archbishop also requested both government and private celebrations of Christmas, including decor and parties to be halted, and instead to use funds allocated for these events to serve the needy people of Sri Lanka. He also requested the people to  avoid celebratory gatherings and travelling during the festive period.
