Smuggled turmeric stock destroyed

21,000 kilos of dried turmeric valued about 120 million Rupees that was illegally smuggled into Sri Lanka from Kalamatiya fishery harbour was destroyed on December 29 according to quarantine regulations. The stock was destroyed at the waste management centre in Uhapitagoda in Ambalantota PS. 

This stock of turmeric was seized on December 27 following an operation based on information given by Intelligence officers of Gonahena Police STF. 


The Director-General of Health instructed the PS to destroy the stock under maximum heat following the Quarantine Act. When the attempt to destroy the stock at Lunama crematorium failed, the stock was taken to Uhapitagoda where the stock was destroyed in front of officers including Hungama Police OIC, Ambalantota PS Chairman and Ambalantota MOH.
