Ahead of national elections, the United National Party (UNP) will launch a fresh islandwide membership drive named ‘Sirikotha Gamata’ in Kalutara on March 10, 2019.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told journalists the objective is to recruit new members and bring them close to party headquarters Sirikotha. He said the party also had the elections in mind when designing the programme.

Asked which elections would be held first, the UNP General Secretary said his party is ready for any elections.

Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa said the party also decided to expedite the development work aiming the elections. “Speeding up the development work is the most important thing now. Politicians are expected to work for the people. Elections are held to choose suitable people to develop a nation. Therefore development comes first,” he said.
