The Department for Registration of Persons (DRP) yesterday requested the public to submit their applications before July 17 to obtain National Identity Cards (NICs) as a valid identity document when casting their votes.

He said the decision was taken following a discussion held with the Election Commissioner and several other officials.
The persons eligible to cast their votes and those above the age limit of 18 should submit their applications before July 17.
The applications received after July 17 would be processed under the Temporary Identity Card category. Temporary Identity Cards would be issued only for the election. All applications should be filled properly before submitting them to the Department.
Temporary Identity Cards would be issued until July 29. The applications received after July 29 will not be processed.
The NIC or documents approved by the Election Commission such as the passport, valid driving license, senior citizens’ identity card, government pensioners’ identity card, identity card issued to the clergy and the temporary identity card issued by the Election Commission through Grama Niladharis will be sufficient to confirm the identity of a voter.
If any voter does not possess a NIC or any of the above documents, they should obtain a temporary identity card.
The temporary identity card will be issued with a photo of the cardholder signed by the DRP Commissioner.

Therefore, the DRP Commissioner General requested the public to submit their NIC applications before July 17 to obtain the NICs.
