Cabinet nod to purchase 10mn more doses

The Cabinet has granted approval to purchase 10 million Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccines at the cost of US$ 52.5 million as direct procurement from the Serum Institute in India and plans to vaccinate 14 million people out of the country’s total population.  

In addition, the government is also to enter into an agreement between AstraZeneca institute in Britain and the Sri Lanka State Pharmaceutical Corporation is to buy 3.5 million vaccines manufactured by the AstraZeneca institute.  


The Health Ministry said the government has plans to vaccinate 14 million people out of the country’s total population against COVID-19.  


The Cabinet also approved to sign the Standardised Indemnification Agreement submitted by the COVAX mechanism in order to expedite the vaccination programme under COVAX facility.
