Dismissal of petitions filed challenging election date is actually a victory for Samagi Jana Balawegaya ( SJB), its General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday.

Mr. Madduma Banadara told a press conference yesterday that dismissal of petition is a victory for his party as it’s demand of holding the general election on a day where there is no threat of COVID-19 has been fulfilled by the Supreme Court Decision.

“Our objective behind filing petition challenging the election date was to stop the election commission from holding the polls on June 20. It will take at least two months for the election commission to hold the polls in the present condition” Mr. Madduma Banadara’ said.

Besides he said government’s objective was to hold the election in May.

Former MP Ajith P. Perera who also participated in the press conference said it would be interesting to know as to why the Supreme Court kept away from the issue and let Election Commission decide on the polls date. Also he said the issue whether the country could be run without Parliament for more than three months also still prevails.
