Twelve out of 16 Kelaniya university undergraduates who were arrested in connection with the removal of newly installed CCTV cameras at the university premises were released on police bail, Police Spokesman Jaliya Senaratne said.

He said the other four students, including the monk, will be charged under the Public Property Act and would be produced in the Mahara Magistrate’s Court today (28).
The monk and three undergraduates were arrested over the incident by the Kiribathgoda Police yesterday afternoon while other 12  surrendered.

The police commenced investigations into the incident after a group of students of the university had damaged and removed the CCTV cameras which were installed by the university administration at the university premises recently.

It was reported that the CCTV unit was installed owing to security concerns and also to monitor ragging incidents within the university.
