Nineteen students of Ruhuna University, who were arrested over a ragging incident, were further remanded till September 9 by Matara Chief Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara yesterday. They have been arrested on the charges of sexually harassing a first-year student and subjecting him to inhuman ragging.
The victim had posted a video on social media about the harassment he was subjected to and later held a media briefing where he revealed the details. The police had then conducted a special investigation to nab the students involved.
The students remanded are Ruhuna University Student’s Council President Veranga Pushpika de Silva and third-year students Darshana Ruwan, Dilshan Tharaka, Navoda Kithmal, Harsha Nayanajith, Supun Sameera, Kasun Dineth, S. Wimalasuriya, Navin Harshana, Lahiru Sachithra, K. Lakshan, Pradeep Dammika, Nuwan Sampath, Shamil Narada, Harsha Devapriya, W.M. Rupasinghe, Kelum Viraj and Kapila Rathnapriya.
