Release of 100,000 sterile male dengue mosquitoes to the environment in an effort to bring under control the breeding of Dengue mosquitoes took place yesterday at Kidagammulla in Gampaha. It was a result of years of research carried out by the Medical Faculty of Kelaniya University and the National Dengue Prevention Unit.

Director of the National Dengue Prevention Unit Dr. Aruna Jayasaekara said the release of sterile Dengue mosquitoes was a landmark event in the dengue prevention campaign.

“Breeding of Dengue mosquitoes could be prevented by sterilizing the male mosquitoes. The project implemented by the Kelaniya Medical Faculty augurs well for the country’s dengue prevention campaign,” he said.
