The Government intends to complete the passage of the Port City Economic Commission Bill through Parliament on May 5, Daily Mirror learns.

The bill has been challenged for its constitutionality. The Supreme Court will send its determination on the bill soon. The Speaker will read it out in Parliament once he receives it.   Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane told Daily Mirror that he is yet to receive the determination.

“We fixed a date for the debate. The bill will be considered, subject to the determination of the Supreme Court. It will be put to a vote if the Opposition calls for a division only,” he said.

Serjeant-at-arms Narendra Fernando also confirmed yesterday that the party leaders agreed to the debate.
Mr. Fernando told Daily Mirror that the debate will take place from 10am to 5.30pm.

An adjournment motion will also be moved for debate on the current pandemic situation on Tuesday May 4, 2021.
The party leaders have also decided to hold sessions for only two days this week. “There will not be any oral questions during these two days,” Mr. Fernando said.
