Police compelled to shoot roaming wild elephant

A wild elephant that roamed into Nelugollakada village in Kahatagasdigiliya was shot dead by the police when they failed to drive it away. 


The jumbo had caused much havoc in the area destroying cultivated land and the home garden crops. OIC Kahatagasdigiliya police CI P.M.Udumagala said a police team that rushed to the area on public complaints had fired shots in the air to scare away it but when the infuriated animal attempted to hit the police jeep and the people the officers had been compelled to shoot it in the interest of public security. Wildlife Conservation office in Anuradhapura and the police are conducting further investigations.
