Police arrest company executive for plotting a robbery

An executive officer attached to a private company at Heiyanthuduwa in Gampaha has been arrested for hatching plans to stage a robbery in order to cover up for spending the company’s money, and had surreptitiously mentioned that a big sum of money was stolen from his workplace by two thieves.  

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the executive had lodged a complaint with the Meegahawatta Police after staging a drama that Rs. 2.3 million in cash and a cheque worth Rs. 84,000 belonging to the company had been robbed when the money and cheque were being taken to the bank on Thursday.   


According to the complainant, the robbery was committed by two men who came on a motorcycle.   


DIG Rohana said, investigations divulged that the robbery was planned by the complainant himself.   Accordingly, it was understood that there was no such large amount of money in the bag, but only Rs. 50,000 in it.   
It has also been revealed that the executive had planned the robbery to cover up after he had spent the company’s money for his personal and other needs.   According to the Police, the complainant has been arrested on charges of conspiracy and his brother-in-law has also been arrested.   


Police investigations disclosed that the complainant’s brother-in-law had deployed two men to snatch the bag away from them.   


The police spokesman said the motorcycle was found during the search operation and investigation is underway to arrest the other two men.   


He said the executive officer and his and brother-in-law would be produced before the Mahara Magistrate.
