The Computer Emergency Readiness Team/Co-ordination Centre (CERT|CC) yesterday requested people not to make any purchase from unknown websites operated by vendors.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, CERT|CC Information Security Engineer Ravindu Meegasmulla said that nearly 15 complaints had been received in this regard during the past couple of months, especially during the curfew.
“Those fake websites have requested buyers’ credit and debit card information to complete the purchase and to deliver the goods to the given location, he said. However, no goods had been delivered to the given locations, but transaction had already been done using customers’ credit or debit card numbers by the website vendors.  They requested the people not to engage in any online purchase from websites other than the registered and recognised websites, Mr. Meegasmulla said.

“If any person had made such online purchases he/she should be watchful about their card transactions ahead. If any unusual or suspicious transactions were carried out, the customers are requested to contact the respective bank and deactivate their card,” he said.

Therefore, the CERT|CC requested the public to communicate with their respective banks about their online payment facilities to activate the One Time Password (OTP) and/or transaction password facilities.
