Power to several areas in the country was disrupted yesterday when the ‘Unit 2’ generator of the Norochcholai coal power plant shut down owing to a technical glitch, said Sulakshana Jayawardena, Media Spokesman and Director (Development) of the Power and Energy Ministry.

“The unit generated 270 megawatts of power to the grid. We have been forced to discontinue power to several areas to cope with the demand. Our engineers and those at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) are on site working to bring the generator back on line,” he told Daily Mirror.

He said the areas affected by the outage as well as the duration of the power cut could not be determined at the moment.
“In the event the generator would not be recovered, power outage might prevail today as well. It may occur for one hour in the morning and once in three hours in the evening,” he said.
