A prison guard attached to the canteen of the Negombo Prison has been interdicted for providing a mobile phone and a SIM card to an inmate, Prisons (Administration) Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake said.

He said following the arrest of two prison guards who were earlier arrested in Mahara and  Matara prisons, the connection of the Negombo prison guard was revealed and was arrested yesterday.

Investigations are underway to identify how the phone and sim card was handed over to the inmate, Mr Ekanayake said.

The Mahara and Matara Prison guards were arrested on June 21.

After the President issued orders to clean-up the prisons and stop drug operations and corruption taking place within prisons, there would be more raids in the future, he said.
