Several roads in Colombo and Puttalam were inundated due to torrential rains that continued last morning.

Police said Thummulla Junction, Baseline Road, Grandpass, Horton Place, Kynsey Road and Armour Street in Colombo were affected by the showers resulting in slow vehicualr movement.

The Kachchimaduwa Reservoir at Kottukachchiya was spilling over due to heavy rain in the Puttalam District.

Meanwhile, the possibility of heavy showers or thundershowers associated with sudden increase of wind speed (up to 70-80kmph) in the North-western sea areas was high due to the active cloudiness in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Kankesanturai via Mannar, the Met Department said.

It requested naval and fishing communities to be vigilant in this regard.

The department further said showers or thundershowers would occur at times in Western, North-western, Northern, Southern, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
“Fairly heavy falls about 75 mm can also be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces,” it said.

“Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and North-central provinces during the morning,” it added.

Moreover, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) also issued early landslide warnings to the Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara and Badulla districts.
Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said 8,285 people from 1,923 families had been affected owing to the adverse weather conditions.
