The military police has no legal right to be involved in civil police affairs such as traffic control, UNP MP Ajith P. Perera said yesterday .
MP Perera told media that according to the Police Ordinance, the military police has no jurisdiction over these ordinary police affairs concerning civilians and all the arrests made by the military police so far were illegal arrests. The MP said the military police only had jurisdiction over matters concerning military officials and had no right over matters concerning ordinary civilians. Furthermore, he said the authorities responsible for the assignment of military police personnel to assist traffic control were performing illegal acts. “ No person should be above the law, not even the president,” he added.
