Met Dept issues Red Alert on several districts

The Department of Meteorology yesterday issued a Red Alert on adverse weather conditions in several districts after heavy rains took one life and caused a minor flood situation.   

The department said people in the districts of Colombo, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kandy, Matale, Badulla and Nuwara-Eliya should expect heavy showers exceeding 150mm in the coming days.   


National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) issued landslide warnings in the districts of Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle and Ratnapura.   


Fishermen were asked to keep away from the sea in the coming days as wind speeds are expected to exceed 70kmph.   


A 59 year old woman in Habaraduwa died when a tree uprooted by the wind fell on her. A bus was damaged at de Fonseka Road, Bambalapitiya when a tree fell on it. A minor flood situation was reported from Colombo, Ja-Ela, and Hali-Ela in the Nuwara-Eliya district. Transport along the Colombo-Negombo Road was held up for several hours because of falling trees.   


Showers exceeding 100mm was reported from several areas with the highest rainfall of 146mm recorded from Kalutara, 140mm from Hanwella, 130mm from Eheliyagoda in the Ratnapura District, 105mm from Kegalle and 100mm from the Galle district.
