Former Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Mahinda Samarasinghe has been removed from the membership of the party, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said. He said the decision was taken at the SLFP Central Committee which met yesterday.

Samarasinghe has been removed from the SLFP following his claims that he was the leader of the SLFP in Kalutara District while contesting under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) in the District at the forthcoming Parliamentary election.

SLFP led by former President Maithripala Sirisena has tendered nominations for the Parliamentary election as a coalition with the SLPP in some districts while contesting under its hand symbol in several districts including Kalutara. In Kalutara District while the party is going solo, Samarasinghe has tendered nomination as a SLPP nominee. A controversy erupted when he claimed that he was the leader of the SLFP in the district while contesting as a candidate of the SLPP and it has led to his removal from the SLFP.
