MPs will not be vaccinated as a priority group- official

Parliamentarians will be given COVID-19 vaccines when Sri Lanka gets more consignments in the future, Serjeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando said yesterday.  

Mr. Fernando who was referring to reports that members of Parliament will be given the vaccine as a priority group told Daily Mirror that there is no urgent move to inoculate MPs. “We may give the MPs the vaccine only when Sri Lanka gets more consignments in the future,” he said.  

He invited all the MPs to participate in the random PCR testing programme scheduled to be held today from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon at the Parliament premises.  

“The random check-ups will be conducted once a week during parliamentary weeks as well as during non-sitting weeks with full support of the Department of the Director General of Health Services,” he said in a press release.  
“Random PCR tests have been carried out since January 13, 2021 and 190 PCR tests carried out last on the 25th of January were reported to be negative,” he said.  

Around seven members of Parliament have been tested COVID-19 positive as of date including Health Miinister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.
