The arrangement made to hand over the letters to 600 trainee applicants for learning Sinhala, Tamil and English languages at the Makumbura Kottawa National Language Education and Training Institute was withheld after the intervention of the officials of the Elections Commission on Saturday (05).
These applicants from Badulla, Jaffna, Kandy Mathugama, Awissawella and Colombo had arrived at the training institute in Makumbura after receiving letters from the Director-General of the NLETI Prasad R. Herath calling them for registration for the language training courses and ensuring registration as the resource persons at the Institute after the successful training. On information received by PS member of the area about the handing over of letters under the pretext of a meeting at a temple near the Language Institute, she obstructed the event.
Letter another attempt was made to distribute the letters by Minister Mano Ganesan who came to the venue meanwhile.
However, the officials of the Colombo South Election office intervened and stopped the handing over of letters stating the event as a breach of election law.
Minister had told the officials this was only an occasion of giving letters to 400 out of 1,200 who could not receive letters earlier.
