Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa yesterday filed a writ petition in the Court of Appeal seeking a stay order on the warrant issued for his arrest by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court in connection with the demolition of King Buwaneka Bahu’s assembly hall.

Acting IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, the Kurunegala Police HQI, Archaeology Department Director General Dr. Senarath Dissanayake, Attorney General Dappula De Livera and Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam were named as the respondents.

The Kurunegala Chief Magistrate on Monday re-issued warrants to arrest Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa and four others in connection with this case.
He had done so after the Kurunegala Police failed to execute the arrest warrants issued on Friday.

The arrest warrants were issued on Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana, Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Nishantha Thilakaratne, Municipal Engineer Chaminda Bandara Adhikari and two officials, Illaludeen Sulfica and Lakshman Priyantha.
