A baby born to a Covid-19 infected mother tested negative, Director of the Colombo East Hospital Dr. Priyantha Karunaratne said.

He said PCR test conducted on the infant had revealed that the baby was negative not infected with the virus.

The pregnant woman who arrived in Sri Lanka from Dubai few weeks ago was referred to the Kandakadu Quarantine Centre for quarantine.

A PCR test performed on the woman on July 21 confirmed that she was infected with the Coronavirus.
The doctors then referred the pregnant woman to a special unit at the Colombo East Hospital.

A staff of 35, including doctors, and microbiologists performed a special type of caesarean surgery to deliver the baby to minimize the release of the virus into the environment.

The hospital Director said that the mother and the infant were in good health at the moment.
