Illegal Australian Drug Rehab

37-year-old Charles Jeevan Beare came to Sri Lanka in Nov. 2017 seeking treatment for his drug addiction. Months after he arrived, Charles was found dead at a park in Colombo in January 2018.   

The treatment facility Charles and his family sought the services of has been an illicit establishment, a Daily Mirror Eye investigation has found.   The treatment was carried out at Seasons Lanka – the Sri Lankan branch of an Australian resort-type drug rehabilitation centre located in Kalutara.   

Days after Charles’s death, the rehab centre was shut down and addicts undergoing treatment were repatriated to their respective countries while the Australian staff had reportedly fled Sri Lanka.   

Charles’s mother, a British national Maryanne India Beare has written to Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera last week requesting him to expedite the case relating to her son’s suspected death. 

The case is currently being heard in a Magistrate’s Court.

Another case has been filed by the Tourist Police on charges of Seasons Lanka and its Sri Lankan partner, Certis Lanka having misled the public by advertising the centre as a licensed drug rehabilitation centre and drawing foreigners to the country to undergo rehabilitation programmes.
