The first-ever surgery to remove six stones in kidneys without opening them – Per Cutaneous Nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) – was performed yesterday at the Badulla Hospital by a team of doctors led by Nephrologist Kalana Paranapalliyaguruge.

“The surgery was performed on three patients with kidney failure. It was done by passing a thin-lighted tube equipped with a camera through an incision to the kidneys to dissolve the stones. This was the first time a PCNL was performed by a single team of doctors apart from the conventional operational systems. The patients are recovering,” Dr. Paranapalliyaguruge said.
