Ex-DIG jailed, fined, appealed, bailed out in one day

The Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday sentenced former DIG Hector Dharmasiri to six years simple imprisonment to run concurrently in three years after he was found guilty of corruption charges.  

He was accused of having used his designation as the then SSP of Matale Division to employ Civil Defence Force personnel to construct his house in September 2017.  
The Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption charged the DIG on 15 counts.  


Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratna, found the accused guilty on six charges and acquit ed him on the other nine charges filed against him.  


A fine of Rs.50,000 was also imposed on the former DIG on each count and a further jail term of 30 months in case of default.  Meanwhile, the former DIG informed court that he would file an appeal against the judgment and as such the magistrate released him on a Rs.300.000 surety bail.
