The Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union (LEOU) yesterday decided to cancel the scheduled indefinite strike with the assurance given by the General Manager Railways (GMR), Transport Minister, Deputy Minister and the Ministry Secretary.
LEOU had decided to launch an indefinite strike last night against the violation of recruitment procedures through the enrollment of engine drivers of over 45 years of age.
LEOU Secretary Indika Dodangoda said the decision was taken following a meeting held at the Transport Ministry yesterday.
During the meeting, the Minister, Deputy Minister, Secretary and the GMR had decided to inform the Public Service Commission about these irregular appointments.
It had been decided to not to make any appointments until a recruitment procedure is introduced by the treasury and the Public Service Commission.
“The applications to fill the vacancies were called for in 2013 and 2014 without mentioning an age limit. Later, the Transport Ministry Secretary and the General Manager Railways (GMR) went against relevant procedures by making these recruitments,” he said, adding that 12 individuals who were selected were over 45 years of age.
