Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara, who were yesterday arrested on charges of criminal negligence and the failure to prevent or minimise the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, were remanded till today.

They were both directed to report to the CID last morning for the purpose of recording statements when Mr. Fernando was admitted to the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital while IGP Jayasundara was admitted to the Police Hospital in Narahenpita.

Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said they were taken into custody from the two hospitals.

In the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attacks, IGP Jayasundara was sent on compulsory leave from April 29 while Mr. Fernando had resigned from his post as Defence Secretary on April 25.

A few days ago the Attorney General had instructed the acting IGP to take necessary steps under the criminal procedure code to name them as suspects and produce them in the relevant Magistrate’s Courts after recording their statements on criminal negligence and the failure to prevent or minimise the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The AG had earlier instructed the acting IGP to name them as suspects
