Another case of a drunken driver disobeying police orders, speeding off and being fired upon was reported from Gampaha last evening. This comes just weeks after a drunken youth disobeyed Navy orders and was fired upon and killed in  Enderamulla, Wattala.

In the latest incident a 32-year-old driver was injured when police opened fire at a three-wheeler which disobeyed police orders to stop in Gampaha last evening, police said.
Police officers on duty at a checkpoint in Gampaha had signalled a three-wheeler to stop but it failed to do so and the officers had informed the the next police checkpoint about the three-wheeler that was heading towards them.

Headquarters Inspector of the Gampaha Police, who had responded to the message, had also signalled the three-wheeler driver to stop. The HQI, who had followed the three-wheeler in his vehicle had opened fire as the driver had failed to obey repeated police warnings to stop.

The driver, a resident of Bemmulla, was admitted to the Gampaha Hospital after sustaining injuries.

It was revealed that the three-wheel driver was under the influence of alcohol.
