Consignment in five parcels sent from the US through a courier agent
A stock of an expensive variety of recreational Cannabis called ‘Kush’ worth of Rs.8 million that was smuggled into the country hidden in electric blenders was seized by Sri Lanka Customs yesterday.
Customs Narcotic Control Unit officials stationed at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) seized the drugs when they searched five parcels on suspicion.
A senior Customs official told the Daily Mirror the five parcels had been sent from the United States through a courier agent addressed to several false local consignees.
The sleuths found 1,150 grams (1.15Kg) of Kush carefully concealed in a couple of electrical blenders and other items when they opened the packages.
Customs Narcotic Control Unit Deputy Superintendent Nuwan Abeynayake and the team are conducting investigations on the instructions of Customs Director-General Vijitha Ravipriya, Additional Director General Anand Easwaran with Customs Social Protection Director H. M. Rajaratne and Deputy Director Ajith Duminda.
The seized drugs had been handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further inquiries.
