A countrywide quarantine curfew or for selected relevant areas will be imposed only if needed in addition to the present three police areas in Gampaha District, DIG Ajith Rohana said yesterday.

The senior police officer addressing the media said the curfew will be imposed on additional areas or if not for the entire country, if the need arises, in line with the latest developments of the current Covid-19 outbreak in Minuwangoda and Divulapitiya areas.

DIG Rohana said yesterday afternoon the decision to impose curfew in further areas will be decided following a security heads’ meeting, which was supposed to take place last evening.
He said the curfew being imposed is clearly a ‘Quarantine Curfew’ and not the usual ‘Police Curfew’ as questioned by many interested quarters of society, which even led to a legal complication in the courts last time the country was in general lockdown.

The DIG however emphasised that the civil transportation especially public transportation taking place through the curfew imposed areas has to be closely monitored, as no buses are permitted to either pick up or drop passengers when they are plying through the said areas.
