Cops among five arrested with ganja in Mannar, Jaffna

Five suspects, including Police Officers, were arrested by the Navy with over 385kg of Kerala Cannabis during two separate incidents in Mannar and Jaffna on Saturday.  

 Accordingly, two suspects including a Police Officer were arrested with 164.3kg of Kerala Cannabis during a search conducted at a roadblock at Ilupawadawei, Mannar, the Navy said.   
They said a suspicious luxury jeep had attempted to escape defying Navy orders to stop at the roadblock.   


However, the Navy stopped the vehicle by opening a warning fire.   


They searched the vehicle and recovered 164.3kg of Cannabis which was packed in a few sacks. 

 
The driver of the jeep is identified as a resident of Kaluwankerni and the Police Officer, attached to the Madagama Police station was identified as a resident of Moneragala.   
The suspects, the stock of ganja and the Jeep were handed over to Mannar Police for further investigation.   


Meanwhile, the Navy in coordination with Sri Lanka Coast Guard arrested three persons with 221.8kg of Kerala Cannabis, during a patrol carried out in the Weththalakerni area,  Jaffna on Saturday.   


The Navy said two suspicious persons on a dinghy had been observed during a patrol carried out by Northern Naval Command in coordination with Sri Lanka Coast Guard, at Weththalakerni beach area.   


The stock of ganja which was packed in six sacks as 89 parcels were recovered and the suspects with the dinghy were apprehended during the raid.   


The suspects along with the stock of KG were handed over to Kankesanthurai Police for onward actions.
