Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekera has lodged a complaint with the Police against Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage, over an alleged threat.
President of the Lawyers’ Collective, Attorney-at-law Manoj Gamage who appeared on behalf of the women allegedly sterilized by Gynaecologist Dr. Mohamed Shafi at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, said the CID was suppressing investigations to absolve Dr. Shafi of any wrongdoing. He further said that some day, the CID Director would be held responsible for such dereliction of duty.
“Mr. Shani Abeysekara may have to wear a jumper one day,” he said at a press conference on Saturday.
Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said the CID Director had lodged the complaint at the Fort Police Station stating that the Attorney had threatened him during a press conference .
Mr. Gunasekera said that SSP Abeysekera was the leading investigating officer in the case against Dr. Mohamed Shafi and according to the Victims and Witness Protection Act he could not be threatened.
