A police sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been arrested by officers of the Bribery and Corruption Commission while accepting a bribe of Rs. 80,000 from a businessman in Sapugaskanda.
Bribery Commission Director (Investigation) SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri said the bribe was allegedly solicited for a court case to be withdrawn.
The CID had commenced an investigation into a complaint into bogus cheques being issued by a businessman in Sapugaskanda. The officer had allegedly obtained a total of Rs. 513,500 from the businessman not to produce him in court over a period of time.
Then the sergeant had asked for another Rs. 100,000 from the businessman claiming that the money was to be given to the magistrate to withdraw the case in court.
The sergeant has already obtained Rs. 20,000 from the businessman as a first instalment and was arrested while accepting the remaining Rs. 80,000 at the businessman’s office in Sapugaskanda yesterday .
The police officer, a resident of Udugampola, Gampaha, would be produced in court today (8).
