C. D. Wickramaratne assumes duties as IGP

After functioning as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) for one and a half years following the Easter Sunday attacks, C. D. Wickramaratne yesterday assumed duties as the 35th IGP at the Police Headquarters.  

Mr. Wickramaratne, was recommended by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa recently to be appointed as the IGP and was approved by the Parliamentary Council.   


He joined the Sri Lanka Police in 1986 as a probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and served in the position for 34 years.   


On the 26 April 2019, former President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the then IGP Pujith Jayasundara, to resign following the Easter Sunday bomb attacks. Jayasundara refused to resign and was put on compulsory leave with Wickramaratne appointed as the acting Inspector General.   


IGP Wickramaratne, studied at Ananda College in Colombo and is a graduate from the University of Colombo.
