The bodies of twin female infants had been found murdered at a house in Ninthavur, Samanthurai last morning, police said.
The infants were 10 months old.
They said they suspected the mother as she was believed to be in a mentally unstable condition.
Police said the woman had been admitted to the Samanthurai Hospital and investigations are underway to arrest her.
