An inmate of the Mahara Prison was killed and another six were captured in a foiled attempt to escape early yesterday morning.

Police said seven inmates had tried to escape the prison by climbing over the wall using ropes and bedsheets.
The prison’s security officers had opened fire in the air to stop them escaping.    One of the inmates who fell from the wall died after being admitted to the Ragama Hospital.    Police said two prison officers were also injured during the incident.    They were also admitted to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama.
