Astra Zeneca Vaccine not effective on new variant: Sajith

• The government had not taken any steps to purchase vaccines except for 600,000 vials donated by India

The Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine is not effective on the new COVID-19 variant virus, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.  

He said that this had been revealed in tests conducted on the vaccine.  

Mr.Premadasa, at the Opposition Leader’s Mobile Service in Lunugamwehera recently said that Sri Lanka had obtained this Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine and added the situation  was turning out to be serious.  He said the government had not taken any steps to purchase vaccines except for 600,000 vials donated by India.  
“The government has forgotten that there are 22 million people living in this country and that they have no plans to bring more vaccines in addition to the 600,000 given free of charge,” he said.
