Assault case Pujith Jayasundera released on bail

IGP Pujith Jayasundara, arrested yesterday on charges of threatening a lift-operator at the police headquarters in 2017, was later released on bail by Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayaka. 

  Mr. Jayasundara, currently on compulsory leave, was arrested by the CID after he was summoned to give a statement on the incident, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said and added that he was later released on a surety bail of Rs.200,000 when he was produced in the Fort Magistrate’s Court.   


The CID launched an investigation after the lift operator, who is a police officer and a resident of Ragama, complained to the acting IGP on June 2 this year.   


In his compliant, the police officer said that on April 11, 2017 IGP Jayasundera had scolded him in foul language, grabbed him by the collar and attempted to assault him in the elevator. The case was postponed to January 8, 2020.
