Commissioner of Examinations Sanath Pujitha said yesterday that around 80,000 student who sit for the GCE Advanced Level examination annually fail the examination due to the wrong selection of subject stream.
He pointed out that out of these 80,000 students 20,000 fail in all three subjects and another 18,000 fail in two subjects.
Speaking at the 2019 prefects investiture ceremony of the Kirawanagama Navodya Maha Vidyalaya in Haldummulla, Haputale, the examinations chief stressed the need for a guideline for the students in the selection of the correct subject stream.
Guiding in this regard is the duty of the principals. Many students who fail the examination are talented but they make wrong decisions in selecting the subject stream, he added.
Mr. Pujitha observing that the country needed not only doctors and engineers said that every profession is important to the country and students have various talents according to which the selection of subject stream has to be made.
He said that the government had taken a policy decision to impart a 13 year continual school education to the students and the principals, teachers, parents and the students had to be aware of what is going on in the education field.
Commending the Army for the leadership training given to the prefects, the Commissioner argued that leadership did not mean being idle, rather it means working while making others work.
Principal Wijepala Kuruppuarachchi received the examination commissioner at the beginning of the ceremony. 61 students received medals at this function from various dignitaries while two chief prefects Lasith Chanaka and Chathurangani Lakmali received their medals from the Examinations Commissioner.
